ABOUT CINDY NELSON

While growing up in the Puget Sound Seattle area, I was always encouraged to pursue my creativity. I attribute my stitch work to my mother and maternal grandmother who educated me the basics of the needle. During my first year in Alaska, my friend, Ellen, taught me to create beautiful beaded jewelry.

I find the beauty of the local scenery in Alaska to be a great inspiration to create one- of-a-kind pieces. I use color and texture in my designs producing original pieces of art. It was easy to connect with art friends in this little community and grow.

I am a self-taught mosaic artist mostly working in glass. I love to break and nip glass to a make a form in each piece. Mosaics make me feel as a puzzle master. Each nipped piece of glass has its purpose within my designs. Every size is precious and always saved, no matter how small, one doesn’t know if it can be used in another piece of work. I have organized my studio in colors or textures of the glass. Incorporating fused pieces within the mosaics makes each piece unique.

In 2012 I started painting in oils and been learning all there is about painting. I learned through Virtual Art Academy https://www.virtualartacademy.com. I highly recommend this site. My paintings express my love of nature. I paint every week with friends either outside (Plein air) or in the studio. I enjoy painting plein air to capture the light and the color outside. Painting outside in different weather conditions and where the light changes drastically provides the challenge in my work. I have been able to take the experience of this into the studio and expand or make larger paintings. I sell both my original plein air and studio pieces.
